IBM Expands with Watson Health Cloud

Tech giant IBM has expanded its influence on the healthcare industry following a billion-dollar acquisition of Chicago-based Merge Healthcare. The $1 billion deal is part of plans to level up IBM’s Watson Technology. Watson, an analytical software, will combine with Merge’s medical imaging systems to form Watson Health Cloud. The by-product is envisioned to be a revolutionary software that will merge imaging analytics and current electronic health-record data and clinical information. Watson Health Cloud is expected to improve the way healthcare providers, users and researchers view healthcare data.

“Medical images are by far the largest and fastest-growing data source in the healthcare industry and perhaps the world – IBM researchers estimate that they account for at least 90 percent of all medical data today,” according to IBM in a statement. The new project opens greater opportunities for the international private medical insurance (IPMI) industry.
